When buying a new car seat there are 4 main considerations that you need to consider when buying a car seat;

  1. The law
  2. Safety of car seat
  3. Age range of your car seat
  4. Type of fixing car has

1. The law

  • UK child seat law says children need a car seat from birth until 12 years of age or 135cm tall (4 feet and 5 and a bit inches = 4 feet and 5.149 inches)
  • Must be carried in a rear-facing car seat from birth until 9 or 15 months depending on what legislation your car seat adheres to (ie what type of car seat it is - see above). If it is a R44 car seat then can be forward facing after the child is 9 months old and 9 kg in weight. They must reach both height and weight. It it is a i-Size R129 Car Seat then the car seat can be forward facing only when the child is at least 15 months old. Rear facing seats offer the best protection in the event of a front facing collision and as such these laws are in place for child protection.

2. Safety of car seat & fitting

Car seats safety

R44 car seats:

  • Tested in front and rear collisions using crash test dummies using advanced measuring instruments design to assess the level of protection of safety each car seat offers.
  • R44 seats can be forward facing when the child is 9 months old and 9kg in weight. They must reach both height and weight.

R129 i-size car seats:

  • tested in the same way as R44 car seats but more advance safety standards that includes side impact testing, extended rearward facing up to age of 15 months.

Fitting safety

ISOFIX bases:

- This is the safest way of fitting car seat as the risk of installing a car seat incorrectly is smaller compared to using your car's seat belt.

- The key advantage to ISOFIX seats is that they are extremely secure attached as they are attached to the strucutre of the vehicle. With ISOFIX seats, there is no scope for seat belts to shift around.

- ISFOX seats are also the easiest and quickest way to fit car seat because all it takes is to place the car seat on the base; no need to run the seat belt through the seat belt every time.

Car Seat Belt:

- Can be used for older cars that don't have ISOFIX fittings.

 3. Age range of your car seat

  • Depends on weight, height and age.
  • R44 tested seats are divided into groups – 0 (0-10kg), 0+ (0-13kg), 1 (9-18kg), 2 (15-36kg), 3 (22-36kg)
  • i-size R129 seats are measured on height alone
  • Some seats can either start off being used from birth and used until the child are 12 and no longer need child seat and can just use seat belt.
